The Targa Florio, held on the island of Sicily since 1906, was a grueling 72-kilometer race on dusty public roads that wound through towns and villages, often just inches from spectators' doorsteps. Nino Vacarella, a local hero and schoolteacher from Palermo, had already won the race in 1965 for Ferrari. In 1971, without Ferrari entries, Vacarella drove for Alfa Romeo, which fielded four Tipo 33/3 cars and paired him with experienced Dutch co-pilot Toine Hezemans. The main competition was expected from three Porsche 908/3s, all with factory backing, but all three suffered misfortune. Porsche 911s and Lola T212s were also in the field, but the stiffest challenge came from within Alfa Romeo's own ranks. Vacarella outpaced his Alfa teammates, Van Lennep and de Adamich, by over six minutes, ending Porsche's five-year dominance. Van Lennep, originally slated to race a Porsche 908, found himself in an Alfa after Porsche withdrew a car, and he finished as the runner-up.
