In the 1960s, France and the UK jointly developed the Gazelle, a light, multi-purpose helicopter. Its first flight was in 1967, and mass production began in the early 1970s by Aerospatiale and Westland Helicopters. It came in two main versions, SA 341 and SA 342, with most production intended for military use. The SA 341 F, made for the French Army, was the first to feature HOT wire-guided missiles. The final military versions were the Astazou XIV turboshaft engine-driven SA 342 L1 and SA 342 M, produced for French Army Light Aviation.
