He treats his subject from the standpoint, not of a single art, but of art and science universally. 'To read Schweitzer's Bach,' wrote Widor, the famous organist of Saint-Sulpice, 'is not only to get to know the composer and his work, but to penetrate also into the essence of music in general.' The original French version was greatly expanded by the author for the German edition, which in turn he considerably revised and enlarged for this brilliant translation by Ernest Newman.
