From 1928 until the introduction of the euro in Ireland, Irish coins bore a set of so-called “barnyard” animals. The set consisted of a horse half-crown, a salmon florin, a wolfhound sixpence, a hare threepence, a hen and chicks penny, a pig and piglets halfpenny and a woodcock farthing. The tiny rabbit threepence was in circulation between 1928 and 1968. Between 1928 and 1940 the coins featured an elaborate harp and stylized script. Coins between 1940 and 1968 (such as this one) featured a simplified harp and script.
