These systems effectively remove substantial amounts of salt, minerals, and other contaminants from water sources like wells, rivers, and lakes. They employ a popular technology known as 'reverse osmosis', which counteracts the natural process of osmosis. Osmosis involves the movement of salt through a semi-permeable membrane from a low-concentration to a high-concentration solution, equalizing concentrations on both sides. Reverse osmosis, however, uses a pressure pump to force water molecules through the membrane's tiny pores, leaving behind salts, organic substances, and other contaminants. The purified water is then collected, while the rejected substances are carried away in a brine stream and drained.
