John Henry Twachtman, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on August 4, 1853, was the son of immigrants. His father worked decorating window shades, a profession John joined at age 14. Evening drawing studies and Frank Duveneck's influence shaped Twachtman's art. He studied in Munich, Venice, and Paris, exhibiting and teaching successfully. Twachtman's palette lightened over time, and his Connecticut landscapes are renowned for their grace and delicacy. Despite personal struggles, he died in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on August 8, 1902.
