In 1824, Landseer first visited Scotland, captivated by the Highlands, which inspired works like 'The Monarch of the Glen'. He also met Sir Walter Scott, who admired his art and chose him for the Waverley novel illustrations. By the 1830s, Landseer's paintings were popular among both aristocrats and the middle class. He moved in high circles and received royal patronage, particularly from Victoria and Albert in the 1840s. In 1850, he visited Balmoral to paint the royal family, and was knighted despite the unfinished portrait. In the 1860s, he sculpted the lions at Nelson's Column. He declined the Royal Academy presidency in 1866 and struggled with madness after 1870. A significant exhibition of his works was held at the Tate Gallery in 1981.
