The Lonsdale brand was founded in 1960 by 22-year-old British boxer Bernhard Hart in London. His brand name was Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), who made a name for himself in modern boxing in the 1890s. Hugh Lowther was, among other things, a founding member of the National Sporting Club, who organized public struggles under strict rules and contributed decisively to the social recognition of boxing. In 1960, Bernhard Hart opened the first Lonsdale store on Beak Street, in London's Soho neighborhood. Since then, well-known professional boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Henry Cooper, Sugar Ray Robinson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton have been wearing and carrying the Lonsdale brand. Even today, these famous personalities and the main milestones of the brand's origin story play an important role and always appear in the modern designs of the now extensive product line.
