The M5 Stuart light tank's evolution began with a proposal to equip the M3 model with twin Cadillac engines and a Hydra-matic transmission, components already in production for commercial vehicles. Successful trials and a shortage of Continental engines led to the approval of the Cadillac-modified Stuart in February 1942. Initially designated Light Tank M4, it was later renamed M5 to avoid confusion with the M4 medium tank, or Sherman. The M5A1 Stuart light tank demonstrated the critical role of speed in armored infantry support and flank protection. Armed with a 37mm gun and two machine guns, it effectively countered German mobile infantry. In 'Flames Of War', Stuarts exploited broken enemy lines, using their speed to outmaneuver slower tanks and target weaker side armor.
