Charming pair of miniature Japanese folk art figurings crafted in the Banko ware tradition. These expressive little sculptures feature stern, hand modeled faces emerging from bright red/orange hoods, a whimsical reinterpretation of traditional Daruma symbolism representing perseverance, resilience, and good fortune.
Each piece is artist marked on the bottom with the Banko kiln stamp, identifying them as part of the historic Banko ceramics tradition from Mie Prefecture, Japan. The bases are unglazed and show natural clay body, while the surfaces are hand painted with rich warm tones and subtle variations that highlight their handmade character.
Good condition, minor paint loss and small chips along edges of the hoods (see photos). The faces are well preserved and retain their wonderful detail and expression.
