These are real beetle wing covers from the Sternocera aquisignata beetle. Other materials used are a base polymer clay, painted in iridescent enamel, abdomen - fluorescent resin eye-shaped cabochon, thorax - neon acrylic square cabochon, antennae - metal headpins, eyes - tiny fluorescent dots, under-wings are finely woven ivory that fastens on the back with a rolling catch bar pin.
Beetle wing jewelry is an ancient craft practiced traditionally in Thailand for decades, valued for their beautiful and hardy metallic iridescence. They are light, but surprisingly tough and durable.
